A Summary of a British Seaside Comedy

Shown on 12th April 1982 The Two Ronnies By The Sea is a sequence of silent sketches, featuring two of the most talented comedians of all time.

This film shows The Two Ronnies at their best, as they demonstrate their skills in acting. Although their usual style of humour is their play on words, with no dialogue in the sketches, they are still very amusing.

Characters

An unlikely group of six people all embark on a couple of days away on the coast. Ronnie Barker plays the part of an old man, who spends his entire weekend chasing a young redhead.

Ronnie Corbett appears to fancy his chances with a young, attractive, blonde lady. They play practical jokes on one another and enjoy each other’s company most of the time.

There are two middle-aged women in the party. One often seems embarrassed in various situations, for example changing on the beach. Whilst the other lady is much more open and happy to join in. She ventured into the sea with a little more gusto than was appropriate, when she submerged everyone’s wristwatches into the water that she was supposed to looking after.

The youngest member of the group is a boy, who endeavours to create mischief at every opportunity. For example he places a crab inside Ronnie Corbett’s shorts and enjoys watching the outcome, when Ronnie lends them to his girlfriend.

Setting and description

The scenes are set on the coast of Tiddley Cove. The film opens, as the train arrives at the station, bringing the party to their holiday destination.

Their weekend accommodation is at ‘The Grand Hotel’, which is anything but grand. One bedroom has a view of a brick wall, the springs go on the bed and the waitress is covered in spots, due to an illness.

The first day of the break is spent on beach, which is lined with beach huts. A series of practical jokes and slapstick comedy is played out.

The next day, the group go to the pier, which is the scene of a typical British seaside holiday, with a clairvoyant, stalls selling beach balls and rude postcards and a shooting gallery.

After a donkey ride and lunch, the party split up to enjoy their individual activities, which include golf, a boat ride, train ride and sunbathing.

Humour

Most of the humour involves innuendo and to a lesser extent serendipity. For example during an evening meal, Ronnie Barker loses his monocle down the redhead lady’s dress and he wastes no time in retrieving it.

The Two Ronnies By The Sea is very amusing and a must see for any Two Ronnies fan.
