They have battled demons, shapeshifters, sirens and encountered angels, but now Dean and Sam Winchester are about to battle the most famous fallen angel of all: Lucifer

The series is well known for leaving the finale on a cliff-hanger. Season one ended with Sam, Dean and their father being involved in a car crash which left Dean dying. Season two ended with Dean selling his soul to save Sam’s life. Under normal rules, the demon would allow ten years of life before claiming the soul but, considering Dean’s hunter status, he was given just twelve months. Season three saw the hell hounds finally catch up with Dean, and the series ended with him being dragged into hell and changed up, ready to be tortured.

Series Four Begins With Dean rescued From hell

After being dead for six months, Dean forces his way from his grave and into daylight. Confused as to what has happened, he finds a deserted town and manages to call fellow hunter Bobby, who believes dean to be a demon and takes some convincing from Dean to prove otherwise. Dean and Bobby track down Sam, who they find in a hotel room with a mysterious woman. Dean doesn’t realise the woman is Ruby, whose first human body was destroyed in series three. Dean also doesn’t know that Ruby has been helping Sam control his demonic powers by drinking her blood to make him strong.

Angels On hand To Help The Winchesters

Having had no idea how he escaped hell, a mysterious man named Castiel reveals himself to Dean as the one who freed him. Castiel is an angel and the only being who could have rescued him from the torture. Castiel explain to Dean that he is the only one who can stop the demon Lilith from breaking the 66 seals that hold Lucifer in his cage. If Lilith breaks the seals, Earth will face Armageddon.

Winchesters At War

Throughout the entire series, the Winchesters have been the best of friends but also the worst of enemies. This was highlighted when they investigated a series of murders, where the murderer was killing for the love of what turned out to be a siren. Both brothers became infected with the siren’s venom and turned on each other. In the penultimate episode, the brothers squared off again. This time Sam, now believing he is the better hunter due to Ruby’s manipulation, got the better of Dean and set out to kill Lilith with Dean warning him never to return.

The 66th Seal

With sixty five seals broken, Dean was taken by Castiel to a place where he would be kept safe for the forthcoming battle. Dean presumes it will be with Lilith but it is later revealed that the angels actually want all sixty six seals broken and will not stop Lucifer rising. Their plan is for Dean to kill Lucifer, which will enable the angels to create a paradise on Earth. Dean tells Castiel that Sam will kill Lilith before she can raise Lucifer but, to Dean’s horror, killing Lilith will break the last seal, enabling Lucifer to rise.

With the knowledge of where Lilith will be, Sam and Ruby set out to destroy Lilith and arrive at an old convent where Lilith is waiting. Castiel has helped Dean to get to the convent but Ruby gives a smile as she stops him from entering the room. As Dean pounds on the door, Sam uses all his power and destroys Lilith. Ruby tells Sam what he has helped her to do as Dean enters the room. Sam holds Ruby while Dean uses her own knife and kills her. They leave as Lucifer’s rising begins.

Show Had Many Humorous Episodes

The success of the show has been mainly down to a mixture of humour and good plotlines. Such humorous episodes have seen Dean infected with a virus that starts as a little anxiety, with Dean playing an imaginary drum kit to Survivors ‘Eye of the Tiger’ song, and an episode filmed completely in black and white featuring a vampire who escapes on a scooter.

Season Five To Be The Last

The last season, due to air in the US in September 2009, is rumoured to be the last, but the Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have both signed contracts for a sixth season. If the CW network picks the series up for another spell, Supernatural may be around for a little while longer.
