Monarch of the Glen Series 6 BBC Scottish DramaThe New Laird of Glenbogle Begins Leading the MacDonald Clan
With the departure of Archie and Lexie MacDonald for New Zealand, Archie's half-brother, Paul Bowman, becomes the Laird of Glenbogle with all its ups and downs.
After all of the changes in Monarch of the Glen Series 5, the transition to a new laird is not without its problems. Paul (Lloyd Owen), raised as an Englishman in the south, is not exactly enthusiastic about all of the Scottish traditions that now surround him. He offends Golly (Alexander Morton) by wearing earplugs when Golly plays the bagpipes at dinner and further upsets more than just Golly when he makes light of the ancient clan ritual of the blessing the loch. Lexie MacDonald Returns to GlenbogleTo further complicate matters, Lexie (Dawn Steele) surprises everyone back at Glenbogle by arriving unannounced from New Zealand. She comes under the pretext of sorting out banking issues back in Scotland, but the truth is that she misses Glenbogle and has been at odds with Archie. Her presence creates new problems for Paul on several different fronts. Donald MacDonald is Under House ArrestAnother new arrival to Glenbogle is Donald MacDonald (Tom Baker), the black sheep brother of Hector who has been gone for forty years. Now under house arrest and under Paul’s guardianship, Donald makes his presence known and wreaks havoc in the lives of several Glenbogle residents. Romance Abounds in GlenbogleNew romances abound with Ewan (Martin Compston) taking a liking to Zoe (Kari Corbett), the new barmaid at the Ghillie’s Rest. Golly becomes romantically involved with Meg (Karen Westwood), the new dance teacher in town, just when Molly (Susan Hampshire) has made the decision to seek out more of Golly's time. Meanwhile, Paul is in the midst of trying to sort out his feelings for Isobel (Simone Lahbib), one of his tenants who left a high-powered job as a headhunter in Edinburgh to revitalize her late gran’s farm on the estate. Paul also meets Lucy (Lucy Ford), the high-strung, aggressive personal assistant of his new neighbor, Chester (Anthony Head), who has moved to the Highlands in order to escape the stress of his business. Trying to keep his head in the midst of dealing with these two women keeps Paul on his toes. Interesting Storylines in Each EpisodeSeries Six introduces several interesting storylines such as Jess’s challenge to catch poachers on the estate while Golly is away, the discovery of a WWII German fighter plane in the loch, and the arrival of Paul’s former commanding officer in the army. Although Series Six feels more like an evening soap opera/drama than the charming drama/comedy it was in earlier seasons (especially Series 1 and Series 2), most people who love Glenbogle will enjoy this series as well. The characters have changed, but the tug to want to live in Glenbogle and know these people is still there and will continue into Series 7.
