Although Archie MacDonald has dealt with tragedy and loss, he continues with his plans to make Glenbogle a profitable Scottish estate in "Monarch of the Glen Series 4".

After Hector's death and Lexie's dash from the altar in Series 3, Archie begins to pick up the pieces and move forward with his plans for the Glenbogle estate. Part of Archie’s vision for the future of Glenbogle involves adding wolves to the Wildlife Centre, something frowned upon by Golly.

Archie and Lexie

Archie and Lexie begin again to make plans for their wedding. However, the road to the altar continues to be rocky when Archie hires Irene, a new housekeeper and cook, as a surprise for Lexie and to remove these responsibilities from her. Lexie is forced to decide once and for all if she is going to be the cook/housekeeper or the lady of Glenbogle. Wedding plans are interrupted yet again by the return of Katrina who hopes to not only get her teaching job back in the village, but also convince Archie that marrying Lexie instead of her would be a mistake.

Molly, the Merry Widow

Molly continues to make adjustments in her new life as a widow. She finds friendship with a new neighbor, Andrew (Paul Freeman), and begins exploring new parts of life that had not been possible in the past. When Archie has his back up against the wall with the death duties from his father’s estate, Molly receives an offer of marriage that could solve their problems once and for all.

Another Son and Heir of Glenbogle?

The greatest development of the season, however, is the discovery that Archie is not Hector’s only surviving son. A secret long hidden from everyone except Golly is brought out into the open when Paul Bowman arrives at Glenbogle searching for the father he never knew.

Changing Relationships

There are other challenges faced by the Glenbogle characters. Golly and Duncan’s friendship is put to the test with the arrival of Irene. And Irene herself is hiding something from her past as she seeks a new life in Scotland. Archie must deal with his own demons from the past with the arrival of a childhood friend who was very close to Jamie, Archie’s deceased brother.

A New Direction for the Series

Series 4 marked a change of direction for Monarch of the Glen that would continue into Series 5. Although many of the same characters remained from the first few seasons, Series 4 picked up where Series 3 left off in terms of changing the feel of the show. The absence of Hector and the significant changes in Lexie’s character made a marked difference in the overall tone. Although still an enjoyable show to watch, Monarch lost some of the charm that was so prevalent in Series 1 and Series 2. Monarch of the Glen Series 4 is regularly shown on various networks and is also available on DVD.
