At the end of Series 2, it appeared that the path to happiness was finally cleared for Archie and Katrina. But Series 3 brings more troubles to Glenbogle in Stella Moon.

Archie had successfully defended his lairdship in the Chieftan’s Challenge. His happiness was soon interrupted by the news that Hector had recklessly led a bus across the already compromised bridge into the estate and the bridge was now in shambles. Series 2 ends with Archie crying out in frustration that yet another roadblock exists in his quest to clear the estate’s indebtedness to the bank.

Series 3 Storyline Transitions

Series 3 was a season of significant storyline transitions. Although all appeared to be ready to move ahead with an Archie and Katrina wedding, the real-life pregnancy of actress Lorraine Pilkington (Katrina) necessitated a change of direction. With her departure from the show, the first episode of Series 3 focused on ending the Archie and Katrina relationship. In many ways, the significant shift seemed out of character for both characters and the removal of Katrina from the show was for many viewers contrived and less than satisfactory.

Stella Moon Takes Over

With the need to repair the collapsed bridge, Archie asks the bank again for more funds. The bank decides they’ve had enough and they send Stella Moon to Glenbogle. She issues an ultimatum that either Archie hand over control of the estate to her or the bank will foreclose and sell Glenbogle. Archie reluctantly hands over control, but not until the rest of the Glenbogle family and staff make sure that Archie will still have a significant say.

Much of Series 3 involves Stella and her role in running the estate. Her strong personality and take charge attitude alienates nearly everyone at some point and she faces her own humiliation in the village when she takes matters too far.

Love and Marriage, Highland Style

Stuart MacIntosh is intent on getting his hands on a significant portion of Glenbogle in order to put a luxury vacation development on it. Matters are complicated when he develops an interest in Lexie, much to the concern of Archie.

And Stuart isn’t the only one in pursuit. Throughout Series 3, other relationships are formed and ended, culminating in another significant development at the Midsummer Ball.

Major Character Departure

Series 3 also marked the departure of another major character through a deadly accident. The character’s death leaves Archie reeling and threatens to undo much of the happiness he has finally found at Glenbogle. Series 3 ends on a both light and somber note as some storylines are partially resolved and others must wait until Series 4.

Monarch of the Glen Series 3 is regularly shown on various channels and is also available on DVD.
