A few months ago Doctor Who magazine invited readers to vote for their all-time favourite TV stories. With results now in, the Top 10 threw up some interesting results.

Doctor Who is one of those legendary TV series that creates an army of life-long fans of all ages. Each fan will agree that they love the series. They may not, however, always agree on the basics. Every fan has their "own" Doctor (usually the one they grew up watching) and their own favourite series. The results of a recent poll in Doctor Who magazine asked fans to vote for their favourite episodes. So, were there any surprises in the Top 10 results and which episode came out as the winner?

The Fans' Top 10 Doctor Who Episodes

The results of the Doctor Who magazine poll threw up a few surprises and, as expected, some of the old classics and those featuring the most recent Doctors found a place in the rankings as well. The Top 10 Doctor Who episodes and their Doctors are:

  1. The Caves of Androzani (Peter Davison)
  2. Blink (David Tennant)
  3. Genesis of the Daleks (Tom Baker)
  4. The Talons of Weng-Chiang (Tom Baker)
  5. The Empty Child (Christopher Eccleston)
  6. Human Nature (David Tennant)
  7. Pyramids of Mars (Tom Baker)
  8. City of Death (Tom Baker)
  9. The Robots of Death (Tom Baker)
  10. Bad Wolf (Christopher Eccleston)

Apart from the expected inclusion of the two most recent Doctors, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, the results here were dominated by Tom Baker's reincarnation as this famous Time Lord with an impressive five episode votes.

There was no room for earlier actors such as Jon Pertwee or Patrick Troughton. Given the demographic of voters, their likelihood of actually still reading a Doctor Who publication and then being willing to vote this isn't, perhaps, that surprising. So, how surprising was it that a late Peter Davison episode took top ranking?

The Caves of Androzani and Peter Davison

Long-time Doctor Who fans may have expected this episode to rank highly as it has done well in previous polls. But, they may not have expected it to top the poll. Those in the know will, however, acknowledge that it deserves its place. Peter Davison may not have been the longest Doctor Who regeneration in the history of the series but he is highly regarded by many fans.

Given a longer time in the Tardis (and perhaps some better scripts!), he may well have achieved the classic status awarded to other Doctors. He was, after all, David Tennant's "own" Doctor and The Caves of Androzani is a powerhouse of a plot and script that saw him bid farewell to the role.
